People in Kesennuma clebrate sweet hill Amba on May 5. She is an idol of citizens, 239 meters (784 feet) high standing behind the port. Way back we climbed rough paths to the top, now you can drive to a parking lot on the hill. It is a 15-mimute walk from there to the top.
Her name writes "tame the wave" in Japanese. The hill is to pray for safe sailing and has a shrine. We kids did not care about religious meaning, just were playing around the top.
端午の節句、気仙沼市民は「あんばはん」を祝賀します。港を見下ろす標高２３９メートルの小さな山、安波山は当地のシンボルといって良いでしょう。以前は獣道のような険しい小道を登りましたが、いまは中腹まで車でいけます。そこから頂上までは１５分ほどで登れます。
波を安んじるという名前ですから、航海の安全を祈願する信仰の山で神社もあります。こどもの頃はそんなことには無関心で、ただ登って遊び回ったものです。
